How To Maintenance Your Car’s Air-Con

How an air-con works

Indicated in the image below, an air-con operates in a closed system with a refrigerant as the working fluid. This means that the incoming hot air never actually touches the refrigerant, but is cooled indirectly by an evaporator/radiator in the airstream.

Basically, the compressor is powered by the engine’s auxiliary belt and compresses the refrigerant gas that now heats up above atmospheric temperatures. The hot, compressed refrigerant is then passed through the condenser, where the excess heat is expelled and the gas condenses and passes through the fluid container. The liquid refrigerant then evaporates through the expansion valve, cooling the gas dramatically and passing through the evaporator in the climate-control system’s airstream, cooling the incoming air. The refrigerant now continues back to the compressor, where the whole process starts again.

What could go wrong…

Your car’s air-con should provide ice-cold relief within five minutes and it is best to evaluate the the air blowing from the vents using the back of your hand. If the air is not cold by then, immediately switch off the air-con and get the system inspected.

There are many things that can go wrong with the air-con system, including gas leaks and failure of bearings and seals, as well as blockages in the pipes or sensor failures. You can take some comfort with the fact that the last component to fail is likely to be the expensive sompressor itself. A lack of lubrication is the main reason an air-con compressor fails, when the gas leaks out, so does the oil and thus lubrication qualities are lost, leading to failure.

Vehicle air-con care…

To prevent expensive breakdowns, it is important to run your vehicle’s air-con for at least 30 minutes a week. This action lubricates the system and prevents the bearings on the compressor from corroding at the touching surfaces.

To avoid air-con odours, change the pollen filter regularly, because fungus that grows on the evaporator can cause bad smells. You should also service the air-con once a year, now that the summer tempresures are settling in and it’s getting hotter. Proper air-con operation…

When a vehicle is parked in the sun, the cabin air is usually hotter than the ambient temperature. First open all windows and switch fan speed to maximum to expel the hot air. Then close the windows and allow the air-con to do its job. When the cabin air is cooler than the ambient temperature, the process can speed up by employing the recirculation function to recycle the cabin air until the cockpit is at the desired temperature.

CMH Mazda Randburg adopted Tirisano-Mmogo Primary School in Cosmo City which is less than 15km away from the dealership. With assistance from the principle Mrs Moabelo we were able to ascertain how we could assist the school.

CMH Mazda Randburg donated a human sized chess set to the school in order to improve the learners IQ and problem solving skills. Studies show that chess can improve concentration levels and improve learner’s memory skills whilst teaching them how to plan and think ahead. Not only is chess excellent for its mental attributes but also ensures the children interact with one another on a social level.

When purchasing a new car or truck there are so many makes and models to choose from, knowing where to start can become a challenge. Therefore, you may still be deciding whether you want an automatic or manual transmission.

CMH Mazda Hatfield has compiled a few pointers to distinguish the Pros and Cons of driving Manual vs Auto transmission vehicles.

Manual Transmission

Manual transmission cars have been in existence since the mass manufacturer of cars. Most people refer to the manual car as a stick shift.

Manual cars are increasingly cheaper to purchase than automatic cars. If you are buying a car on a low budget go for the manual transmission.

Pros:

  • Driving a stick shift gives you more control since you control gears, thus making it easier for you to slow down and/or stop.
  • Manual transmissions require less maintenance because they are a much simpler design. However, the clutch may need to be repaired or replaced at some point.
  • Manuals are also more fuel-efficient since you’re not using as much power as an automatic car.
  • On average, standard transmissions are usually cheaper than their automatic counterparts

Cons:

  • Requires a higher level of concentration due to manually changing gears with hands and feet.
  • Learning how to drive a stick can take some time. Do not expect to purchase a manual transmission and drive it off the lot if you’ve never driven one before.
  • Reselling a manual vehicle can be cumbersome since a number of people prefer to drive an automatic car. Many people don’t know how to drive a manual

When driving you have greater control of the car when you are using a manual transmission. However, you need to concentrate and balance your feet when operating the gas, clutch and brake pedals. Your hands are constantly on the gears. Maintenance costs are lower in a manual car than an automatic transmission.

These came later and were mostly fitted on luxury cars. Today most cars have automatic transmission. The lack of the clutch in automatic transmission cars makes it easier to drive. An automatic car offers a smoother ride because you do not need to get the clutch right when driving. It is even easier to drive an automatic car during traffic jams.

Pros:

  • Automatic vehicles are easier to use because the transmission does the shifting for you..
  • When driving an automatic car, you are able to keep both hands on the wheel. This adds safety to everyday driving, especially for the new driver.
  • Driving an automatic car tends to be more comfortable since there are only two pedals to work with and the driver doesn’t need to concentrate on shifting gears.

Cons:

  • Automatic vehicles cost more in the long run. They cost more upfront and require more maintenance because of their complex design system.
  • With an automatic vehicle, you rely on the torque converter to switch gears for you which makes it less fuel-efficient

If you are an inexperienced driver it can be difficult navigating steep hills with a manual transmission. This is especially the case when the car is at a complete stop. Automatic cars let you focus on your steering as both hands are occupied. You also forget those embarrassing moments when your car stalls in the middle of a traffic jam. Driving an automatic car is less stressing during traffic jams. You do not need to constantly press and release the clutch.

Conclusion

The decision to purchase a manual or transmission is a personal one. With a manual car, you have low purchase and maintenance costs. However, the manual car is difficult to drive as you have to constantly have one hand changing gears while your feet are balancing braking and the clutch. The manual gear is hard to learn when you are doing hill starts. But, they let the driver have better control of the vehicle. Manual cars are tiring when you are driving through traffic jams.

Automatic cars enjoy increased in usage. They have become more common. But, they are harder to maintain when compared to manual transmission. They, however, offer a smoother ride. You also have reduced chances of the car stalling. Nowadays, we have automatic transmission with more gears – five, six and even eight-speed. Minor Service vs Major Service: What Does Each Include? Car services are carried out, as a rule of thumb, either every 10 000 km or 15 000 km, especially when your vehicle is still “new” and is still within its service and maintenance plan. You’ll notice that only every “other” service is a major service, and the ones in between are known as minor services.

By regularly servicing your vehicle you are likely to see a lot of perks, including increased fuel-efficiency, better handling, improved braking and a smoother running engine. The most important reason to service your vehicle is to maintain its market value.

What is included in a Minor Service?

Generally speaking, minor services will include:

  • Changing the oil
  • Changing the oil filter.
  • Lubricating the chassis (if it has not been factory sealed)
  • Inspection of all fluids, filters, belts, hoses, brakes and emissions.
  • Tyre rotation (some manufacturers recommend as a part of a minor service) – although this is more an exception than a rule. Most dealers will, however, check your tyre pressure.
  • Check all lights are operating
  • Check windscreen washer Level
  • Check coolant level
  • Check brake fluid level + colour
  • Check power steering fluid level

If you have had any snags since the last time your car was serviced, we recommend asking the mechanic to carry out an inspection on the problem areas. Explain to them the issue you are experiencing, and they will advise if further work needs to be carried out before your next service is due.

How To Check Your Vehicle’s Fluid Levels

Check Your Vehicle’s Fluid Levels, incorrect fluid levels can cause breakdowns or even serious damage to a vehicle. For accurate vehicle care, here’s how to monitor key vehicle fluid levels between your dealer service visits.

CMH Mazda Menlyn has compiled 5 basic fluid checks you can perform on your vehicle:

Checking your engine oil level

The engine must be cold and not running, look for a yellow, red, or brightly coloured loop/hood that looks like a handle. Have a cloth/rag handy and pull the oil dipstick out of the tube. Wipe the dipstick clean with a cloth/rag and insert it fully back into its tube. Remove the dipstick and check that the oil level is between the markings indicated on the dipstick.

Check Your Vehicle’s Fluid Levels

Power-steering fluid

The remotely mounted translucent plastic power-steering bottle will have minimum/maximum indicators molded into it. Make sure that the power-steering fluid is always between those two levels, and not too full or too low.

Engine/Radiator coolant

Engine needs to be cold and not running (do not open the coolant or radiator cover when the engine temperature is high/hot), locate the reservoir for the coolant recovery system. It’s usually a translucent plastic container mounted near the radiator, the reservoir will have upper (hot) and lower (cold) level markings molded into it. If the fluid is below the lower mark, add coolant up to that point, but not any higher.

Brake fluid

The brake fluid reservoir is usually on top the master cylinder at the rear of the engine compartment on the driver side. Locate the translucent plastic reservior with upper and lower level markings molded into it. If the level is near or below the lower mark, have an auto repair shop inspect the brake system for leaks or wear as soon as possible.

This usually has a sign that looks like a tiny water fountain. If the fluid level is low just fill the bottle with water until the fluid nears the top. Use a bug-removing washer fluid in summer.

Whether or not a tyre can be repaired depends entirely on the size and location of the puncture and the extent of the internal damage, which results from driving with a deflated tyre.

Step-By-Step Guide To Changing A Tyre:

  • Flat tyres often happen in the most inconvenient locations. On the road, you’ll need to find a safe spot to pull over. If possible, have the flat tyre facing the verge-side of the road, instead of the traffic side. Once safely parked, put on your hazards, put your vehicle in neutral/park and pull up the handbrake.
  • Place your emergency triangle approximately 20 meters behind your vehicle on the road.

  • Get your spare wheel, jack and wheel spanner from under the floor of the boot/trunk. This may vary depending on your vehicle some vehicles have the spare wheels mounted on the back or underneath of the vehicle.

  • Remove the hubcap and loosen the wheel nuts using the wheel spanner turning anti clockwise, don’t completely remove the wheel nuts just yet. Proceed to jack the vehicle up high enough off the ground to remove the wheel, remove the wheel nuts, carefully remove the flat wheel and place it under the vehicle in-case your jack fails.
  • Align spare wheel rim with the wheel bolts and slot into place, and put back the wheel nuts tightening the nuts in a star pattern (Don’t tighten the wheel nut next to the one you’ve just worked on, but rather the one just opposite it) to ensure even torque with your hands till they nice and snug.   • Remove your flat wheel from under your vehicle and proceed to lower your vehicle once done remove the jack. Double check that the wheel nuts are snug with the wheel spanner once lowered.
  • Place flat wheel, jack, wheel spanner and emergency triangle into the boot/trunk. Have the flat wheel repaired or replaced as soon as possible.

  • The Basic Warranty — Otherwise known as the manufacturer’s warranty. These usually come with new cars and cover most of the components in a car that might break down during the early years through normal wear-and-tear. They do not cover tyre or battery replacement, and you can forget about it if you misuse the car.
