Check Your Vehicle’s Fluid Levels, incorrect fluid levels can cause breakdowns or even serious damage to a vehicle. For accurate vehicle care, here’s how to monitor key vehicle fluid levels between your dealer service visits.

CMH Mazda Menlyn has compiled 5 basic fluid checks you can perform on your vehicle:

Checking your engine oil level

The engine must be cold and not running, look for a yellow, red, or brightly coloured loop/hood that looks like a handle. Have a cloth/rag handy and pull the oil dipstick out of the tube. Wipe the dipstick clean with a cloth/rag and insert it fully back into its tube. Remove the dipstick and check that the oil level is between the markings indicated on the dipstick.

Power-steering fluid

The remotely mounted translucent plastic power-steering bottle will have minimum/maximum indicators molded into it. Make sure that the power-steering fluid is always between those two levels, and not too full or too low.

Engine/Radiator coolant

Engine needs to be cold and not running (do not open the coolant or radiator cover when the engine temperature is high/hot), locate the reservoir for the coolant recovery system. It’s usually a translucent plastic container mounted near the radiator, the reservoir will have upper (hot) and lower (cold) level markings molded into it. If the fluid is below the lower mark, add coolant up to that point, but not any higher.

Brake fluid

The brake fluid reservoir is usually on top the master cylinder at the rear of the engine compartment on the driver side. Locate the translucent plastic reservior with upper and lower level markings molded into it. If the level is near or below the lower mark, have an auto repair shop inspect the brake system for leaks or wear as soon as possible.

Window washer fluid

This usually has a sign that looks like a tiny water fountain. If the fluid level is low just fill the bottle with water until the fluid nears the top. Use a bug-removing washer fluid in summer.

1. Check Your Dash Board: Have you grown accustomed to a warning light? Don’t ignore it! Have it checked out sooner rather than later. Again, catching a problem early will prevent costly repairs in the future.
2. Headlights and brake lights: Be sure your lights are functioning correctly – brake lights that are burned out are a danger to yourself and other vehicles on the road. For safety, you need to be able to see and be seen.
3. Have your brakes inspected: Worn brakes impede your ability to stop quickly making it more likely you’ll find yourself in an accident. To avoid this a professional mechanic should check your vehicle’s brakes regularly.
4. Know Your Car: Pay attention to your car and familiarize your child with the car as well. Make sure they know where they can find the safety equipment, spare tire and owner’s manual.
5. Top off all the fluids. Yes, that means performing regular oil changes. But it also means checking on all the other fluids your car needs — transmission, brakes, coolants and more. Clean fluids help your engine run smoothly, while dirty fluids can cause damage.
