Seeing the Mazda CX-60 3.3l Tubro Diesel Mild-Hybrid Takumi at CMH Mazda Umhlanga in the metal is a sight. The colour matched bumpers and cladding give the SUV a distinguished gentleman vibe.

As soon as you open the door and step in, you are greeted by soft Nappa leather and Mazda’s driver centric cockpit.

Once you push the start/stop button, the behemoth, 3.3l inline-6 turbo diesel fires to life. Despite the mighty engine, Mazda has done a great job to keep the noise levels and emissions down.

After adjusting the seat and steering using the Mazda Driver Personalisation system, it was time to take off. The inline-6 turbo diesel effortlessly moves the almost 2 tonne body.

Power delivery is smooth and consistent when the vehicle is in normal mode. You do not even realise that you have 187kw and 550nm of torque under your right foot.

Change the vehicle into sport mode using the Mi-Drive system and instantly the throttle pedal is more responsive. Put the pedal to the metal and the 3.3l turbo diesel just keeps picking up speed.

Throw it around a corner and it will surprise you with how well it handles. This is a vehicle that needs to be driven to get the full experience.

The only thing that I am sad about is, I did not get to take the vehicle home for the weekend.

Verdict

The Mazda CX-60 3.3l turbo diesel mild-hybrid Takumi will make an excellent daily driver thanks to its comfort, and it will also make an excellent addition to the family on trips thanks to its enormous boot. Let’s not forget that this vehicle is also all-wheel drive, so you can hit the trails without any worries.

I was not able to test the 4.9l/100km claimed average fuel consumption because of my short test drive, but if Mazda’s previous vehicles are anything to go by, this one will sip diesel. You better hurry to CMH Mazda Umhlanga if you want one as the first 2 were sold within 2 weeks of the launch.
